History
The Sri Lankan American community in Florida, though relatively small, has long been spread across cities throughout the state. In its early years, community members organized picnics and informal gatherings to foster fellowship, goodwill, and a sense of belonging. These events served as an important way to introduce new residents to established members within each local community. Yet, despite these efforts, a clear gap remained—Sri Lankans living in different cities had limited opportunities to connect with one another.
That began to change in 1995 with the inaugural Sri Lankan Cricket Quadrangular Tournament at Okeechobee Park in West Palm Beach. This landmark event brought together Sri Lankans from across Florida under a single banner for the very first time. Founding members of the community generously sponsored trophies, creating not only a competitive spirit but also a strong sense of unity and camaraderie.
The tournament soon evolved into a vibrant, family-oriented gathering that welcomed participants of all ages. With warm hospitality and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, it rotated annually among Orlando, Tampa, Miami, and West Palm Beach, strengthening intercity connections and reinforcing a shared community spirit.
As the competitive intensity of the tournament grew, it occasionally overshadowed its original spirit of fellowship. Recognizing the need to restore that balance, the community introduced a social gathering that extended beyond the cricket field—an evening of dining, music, and dancing to the vibrant rhythms of baila, celebrating Sri Lankan culture in a more inclusive and expressive way.
In 1999, Orlando hosted one of the earliest of these gatherings at the Ramada Resort, marking a significant milestone in community engagement. With tickets priced at just ten dollars per person and hotel accommodations available for thirty dollars per room, the event was accessible and welcoming. In the years that followed, Tampa, Miami, and West Palm Beach continued this tradition, hosting these celebrations in rotation.
What began as simple events featuring local musicians gradually evolved into large-scale cultural celebrations. Bands from neighboring states were invited to perform, enhancing the musical experience and drawing greater community interest. As the event continued to grow in scale and reputation, it began attracting internationally acclaimed performers from Sri Lanka. Renowned Sri Lankan artists and groups such as Wayo, Umaria, 2FORTY2, and Bathiya & Santhush elevated the event, bringing new energy and a deeper cultural connection.
Today, this beloved tradition has become one of the most anticipated annual gatherings for Sri Lankans across Florida. This year, Tampa proudly marks the 32nd anniversary, with an expected attendance of approximately 500 community members. Adding to the excitement, the homegrown Tampa-based band, Centurions, will be backing an international artist—symbolizing the remarkable journey from humble beginnings to hosting globally recognized talent.
It stands today as a powerful testament to unity, cultural pride, and shared heritage.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated individuals whose tireless efforts and countless sleepless nights have sustained this tradition over the years. Their unwavering commitment ensures the preservation and celebration of this event, passing it on to future generations.
